Becoming an Animal Care Manager

Animal Care Managers are responsible for caring the animals, overseeing facilities and supervising the animal care workers in an array of settings, such as farms, zoos, kennels, pet stores, animal shelters and other facilities. They ensure the routine work including feeding, bathing, cleaning, exercising and other tasks necessary for the welfare of animals. In addition, they perform other important duties including examining animals’ heath, keeping detailed records, developing operational procedures, managing budgets, monitoring adoption events, interacting with donors, preparing reports concerning the setting, employees and treatment of the animals so on and so forth. They may also conduct lectures in order to stimulate animal interest, encourage volunteer programs, and conserve endangered animal species.

Work Environment

Animal Care Managers can get employment in a variety of settings, including zoos, kennels, stables, animal shelters, pet stores, veterinary clinics, aquariums, humane societies, nonprofit animal welfare organizations etc. Though these professionals mostly work in an administrative role, they may also come into direct contact with animals while assisting their staff from time to time. They primarily work routine office hours but some evening and weekend hours may be necessary depending on their responsibilities in the setting.

Educational Requirements

To become an Animal Care Manager, the aspiring candidates need to complete a four-year bachelor’s degree in animal science, biology, business administration or other related field. Common course work may include animal handling, disease prevention, animal protection, computer applications and management skills. Most employers prefer the candidates having some experience in management or supervisory positions in the field of animal care. Besides, these professionals should have the knowledge of various animal species, animal behavior, animal care and nutrition.

Job Outlook and Salary

According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the projected growth rate of job opportunities for Animal Care Managers may rise 15 percent from 2012 to 2022, faster than average for all other careers. The average annual salary of an Animal Care Manager was $ 54,000 in May 2015.
